Dear City Mayor Ada Colau, Dear President Fernando Carpena, Dear Water Polo Friends,
I think we are among the luckiest people on the planet since we can be here, in the magical and wonderful city of Barcelona and we are enjoying the very best of water polo.
All of us have to be proud and feel gifted since we will witness as another chapter is being added to history. Yes, we can feel history here, in the beautiful Picornell Pool. Every corner, every seat, every room, corridor, the pool deck has lots of stories to tell from the past quarter century.
Heroes were born here, records were broken, fantastic goals were scored. Olympic Games, World Championships, European contests already filled an extremely rich history book – but now comes the next chapter and I am convinced that it will be as excellent, exciting and memorable as the previous ones.
Let me thank for the City of Barcelona, the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation, the Catalonian Swimming Federation, the organisers and LEN Partners and local supporters for setting up a perfect environment for the championships.
Also, let’s already praise and applaud all volunteers for dedicating themselves to deliver a great event, and we are also grateful for all authorities to grant our comfort and safety in the following two weeks.
Our teams, featuring the best players in the world, are ready to show again that water polo is one of the best sports on Earth. It’s entertaining, engaging, demonstrates the most important values of sport, how hard work and team efforts pay off.
I’m sure you are ready so the slogan has become real: now nothing can stop us – let the show begin, may the best win!
