D12 Budapest 2021 – FLASH QUOTES

Women’s 100m back

GOLD Kathleen Dawson (GBR) 58.49 – “I’m ecstatic about this win, I’ve been very consistent throughout this competition so I’m happy to see all end well. I’m quite impressed with myself, I admit I was slightly disappointed when I found out I had to swim again tonight. But my coach told me I could do it again easily. So then I just focused again and got ready to go.”

SILVER Margherita Panziera (ITA) 59.01 – “I’m very satisfied with the time as I didn’t swim this event for years and this is my first medal in the 100m. I’m sort of feeling I haven’t deserved this. In the first race I made a mistake, it just happens. And then I got this new chance and I’m really happy. But I feel like Kira (Toussaint) should have won this medal but sometimes the luck changes and I took my chance.”

BRONZE Maria Kameneva (RUS) 59.13 – “I have to say that it was not so tough for this second time but I have to recognise that the time was a bit worse. At the same time I’m happy to confirm my third place in this event as I was extremely surprised when they told me that I had to swim again. A cannot describe my emotions because of this situation.”

Women’s 4x200m free relay

GOLD Great Britain 7:53.15

Lucy Hope: “I’m really happy to win, obviously. I wanted to start the team off really well and I think I put on a good performance and a good time. I still felt a little bit off since basically we had no rest since our Olympic trials three weeks ago. It’s really exciting how Team GB is doing here.”

Tamryn Van Selm: “I’m so happy and excited to be part of this group of girls. I remember watching the relay in 2018 on TV in my home and now it’s unbelievable to be part of this group. I’m so honoured to be here and to have done such an amazing performance.”

SILVER Hungary 7:56.26

Zsuzsanna Jakabos: “No, I wasn’t excited at all… (laughing) It was a great race and I’m really happy that I could swim inside 2min both in the morning and in the evening. I think all of us did a great job tonight.”

Laura Veres: “I never thought that I would be part of such an experience in my first senior European Championships, that’s truly amazing. I hoped that after me Bogi (Kapas) would hold on and we could get a medal… She was simply awesome!”

Boglarka Kapas: “Before the final I really believed we could win a medal here, though I didn’t want to tell the girls and didn’t want to put myself under pressure until I stepped onto the podium and saw we were in a very good position. Since I had to race against Federica Pellegrini, I knew I had to gear myself up. I’m pretty happy with this 1:57 split, and it’s great to achieve such result in an Olympic year.”

BRONZE Italy 7:56.72

Stefania Pirozzi: “I’m really satisfied, this is our first podium since the gold in Berlin 2014. After that we got lost a little bit. It was a shift in generations, but this relay and the bronze is a step towards our return to the top level of European and international relays. This is my fifth 200m race in three days, I was hoping for a better time but to go under 2min is always great.”

Sarah Gailli: “I’m very happy, this is my first senior European Championships and a medal with this relay is a special one. I’m very happy with my time, being under 2min means a lot.”

Federica Pellegrini: “This relay was a little lost for a while. Step by step, we are coming back. I’m very satisfied with my time, this bronze is an impulse and a motivation for us to work more and go further, for sure.”

Women’s 200m breast

GOLD Molly Renshaw (GBR) 2:21.34 – “I’m extremely happy, this is my first gold medal in this event. The semi-final was very strong and I’m really satisfied because I didn’t expect to swim as fast as I did in the final.”

SILVER Lisa Mamie (SUI) 2:22.05 – “I don’t even know what to say right now. I’m so happy, I never expected that. This is a dream come true and I don’t think I’m realising everything right now. I have no words…”

BRONZE Yuliya Efimova (RUS) 2:22.16 – “I’m really happy in this medal because I know I’m not in a good shape because of Covid and in general. After Gwangju 2019, knowing that we would going into an Olympic year, I took three months of vacation. Then it turned out that the Olympics were postponed by one year so ultimately I didn’t compete for more than two years. My first event was the Russian national two weeks ago so this is my second race. So I need time and races. After this I will do Mare Nostrum because I need more meets to have the racing routine once again.”

Men’s 200m free

GOLD Martin Malyutin (RUS) 1:44.79 CR – “I feel tired but at the same time I also feel comfortable and confident because of my finish and my strategy which worked very well.”

SILVER Duncan W Scott (GBR) 1:45.19 – “I’m really happy with this silver. The time is not far off my best time and the world’s best in 2021. This is my seventh 200m race in three days so I was a bit tired. All in all, I’m really happy with this outcome.”

BRONZE Thomas Dean (GBR) 1:45.34 – “I’m really happy with the race and the time, plus we have two Brits on the podium, that’s always great. This was without rest or tapering, so I’m very happy and obviously there is a lot more coming in the summer.”

Men’s 50m fly

GOLD Szebasztian Szabo (HUN) 23.00 – “First of all, this time is pretty bad but I came for the gold here, I took it, so it’s alright after all. We are in the Olympic year so the focus is on the 100m fly and I think I have the necessary speed to clock a much better time in that event. OK, I’m happy, of course.”

SILVER Andriy Govorov (UKR) 23.01 – “This is a very strange season for me. Yesterday I swam better, losing by 0.01 is random, but this event is for fun, winning the silver is fine for me I just need to swim the 50m free better.”

BRONZE Andrey Zhilkin (RUS) 23.08 – “This medal is nice but not the time. The 50m fly is like a surprise, any swimmer can win this race and each small detail is very important from start to finish. Today I missed the touch at the end and this is one of the details why I did not win this race.”

Women’s 1500m free

GOLD – Simona Quadarella (ITA) 15:53.59 – “I’m satisfied, I was hoping for a little bit better time. But I’m happy for the win and content with taking home the gold once more from the Europeans.”

SILVER Anastasia Kirpichnikova (RUS) 16:01.06 – “I don’t feel that great now, I’m pretty tired. I’m not satisfied as I wanted to beat the national record. Of course, I’m still happy with the silver but I wanted a better time though I’m also very exhausted as I did open water last week. The 800m is easier for me, but there is a lot more work to do for the Olympics, which is my main goal.”

BRONZE Martina Caramignoli (ITA) 16:06.81 – “I’m very happy because the last time I stood on the podium was in 2014. For me this race was the main target here, this medal is something very important for me.”
