D14 Budapest 2021 – FLASH QUOTES

Women’s 400m free

GOLD Simona Quadarella (ITA) 4:04.66 – “I’m very satisfied and emotional. I was not expecting to win this race and get three golds at these Europeans. I felt really tired, I felt way less secured in myself and confident than in Glasgow. Last year I wasn’t feeling well, I wasn’t in a good shape I did not prepare for these Europeans as I should have. I’m very excited to take part in my first Olympic Games this summer. I dedicate this to my sister as well as she was the one who was first did swimming trainings and the one I looked up to.”

SILVER Anna Egorova (RUS) 4:06.05 – “It was not so easy. It’s the last day, I’m a little tired. If I did my best time I would have won but it’s OK, the big goal is the Olympics. This meet is only part of the training cycle.”

BRONZE Boglarka Kapas (HUN) 4:06.90 – “I kind of remember how this race should be swum. I’ll be honest with you, I did not really want to do this today but at the end I gave it a go as I knew I was capable of something similar I showed today. Maybe this small mental block didn’t help to get the best out of myself, as now I can say that I don’t feel I burnt all my reserves. In fact, when I turned to the last 50m I, I was like, oh, I can do this finish, oh, I should have gone a bit faster up until now. Anyway, I’m pretty happy to have this medal, especially after having some terrible moments early afternoon, so now I have a full set of medals here and ready for the Olympics.”

Men’s 4x100m medley relay

GOLD Great Britain 3:28.59 CR

Adam Peaty: “Oh my God, I’m so tired, I just want to go home. It’s been a lot of races for me this week so I have to look into how I can recover better and faster for the Olympics. But I’m very happy, we are looking very strong, we have a great team and a great support team behind us, so we can only perform really well.”

Luke Greenbank: “I’m really pleased with this relay and with the whole week really. I came very close to my best and I’m going to use this as momentum going into this summer. As a team, we exceeded the expectations. It’s great to finish on such a high. It’s also good to finally come back and race in a major championship after two years. I think Team GB has shown what is capable of but I know we are capable of much more.”

SILVER Russia 3:29.50

Andrei Minakov: “We are happy with our performance. It was difficult to catch the British, they were so far from us, we were swimming lanes apart. The silver is OK but we wanted the gold.”

Kliment Kolesnikov: “Finally, we are going back home. It feels like we’ve been here for a month. I feel really tired but I would say this ending with the silver medal is great since not everyone can stand on the podium. I’m proud of my team-mates and also of the girls to take medals like us. This a great end to this event.”

BRONZE Italy 3:29.93

Nicolo Martinenghi: “I’m so happy, this is a new Italian record after a very long time. We’ve been waiting for it for years, since Debrecen 2012 and it was missing from the achievements made by our relays. We believed in this relay firmly and this is the result. This is not the end I think we can be even better and we will do everything in our power to be do so.”

Federico Burdisso: “We came third rather calmly. These races are excellent preparations for Tokyo. We will continue training in different ways. Personally, I will go to an altitude training camp, all of us have qualified for Tokyo. This is my first European medal in relay and the third at these Europeans after Glasgow. I’m glad to carry on with podiums at the Europeans after Glasgow.

Women’s 4x100m medley relay

GOLD Great Britain 3:54.01 CR

Molly Renshaw: “In general, this whole week Team GB was smashing it, especially in the relays. We were all so pumped, behind the scenes, watching the boys’ relay in the call room. We knew if we all swam our best times we could be on top of the podium. It’s nice to be able to deliver when it counts and get the Championship record at the same time.”

Kathleen Dawson: “It feels amazing to see Great Britain come first in both relay tonight. Seeing the boys win right before us just lit a fire under us. We worked really well as a team. I want to thank my coaches and my support team and my family back home. I’ve swum so consistently here and it’s all thanks to them. It’s been such a great week and I really enjoyed myself.”

SILVER Russia 3:56.26

Yuliya Efimova: “This medal is good, it is the best I claimed at these championships. We need a lot of competitions before the Olympics, no one in the team is in shape since we are training very hard for the Olympics. For now, this silver is good enough.”

BRONZE Italy 3:56.30

Elena di Lido: “This is a new Italian record, came somewhat unexpectedly. The last one was set in Gwangju 2019. This is a very good time from this relay and personally my leg 56.02 is also great. It’s been a really long week but all this gives us hope for the Olympic Games. We, Italians are very superstitious and don’t like predictions, however, the medals from these Europeans give us an impulse to expect something good in Tokyo.”

Margherita Panziera: “We are very satisfied. We wanted to reach this podium so badly and at the end we succeeded. We were all a little bit tired and pulled everything we have left together to achieve this gold. It’s been a while since Italy had such competitive relays in each category. This year I didn’t go to altitude training camps, I used to do it before but I needed and decided for a change. I stayed in Rome and trained. As we can see it turned out well.”

Men’s 100m fly

GOLD Kristof Milak (HUN) 50.18 CR – “I never mention times beforehand, now I can tell I was hoping for something similar, between 50.2-50.4, I knew I was capable of that now so this Championship Record is pretty fine for today. I managed to take on the guys in Europe, now there is one more whom I have to clash in the summer. This is what I’m preparing for and I hope I will be in competition mood in Tokyo since today I didn’t feel any excitement, which you supposed to have at a European Championships. But no, my mood was like as if this were our nationals, if at all. Maybe I’ve got a bit tired by the end of the week, mostly mentally because of being locked down for so long. Though it also prepares me what we can expect at the Olympics, so I’m fine, ready to go all the way.”

SILVER Josif Mladenov (BUL) 50.93 – “This is my first European Championships over long-course so this medal just feels great. It’s also an amazing feeling to swim with such an amazing group of guys like Kristof Milak. I’m only 17 so it’s just a really nice experience for me. I’m really thankful to be here.”

BRONZE James Guy (GBR) 50.99 – “It’s been a long and exhausting week. Today I had a good swim. The race went pretty much as yesterday. This is a great start off for Tokyo. I’m happy to go under 51 again after four years. It shows you have to keep going and never give up. There is a saying, ‘the form is temporary, the class is permanent’.”

Women’s 200m back

GOLD Margherita Panziera (ITA) 2:06.08 CR – “I really wasn’t expecting this. I had such a bad feeling about this race. I’m really very happy and satisfied, especially with my time which is very good. Now I just have to continue working very hard and continue to grow in wake of Tokyo.”

SILVER Cassie Wild (GBR) 2:07.74 – “I’m absolutely shocked so shave 2sec off my personal best at the end of such a hard racing week is just crazy. I cannot believe that I got my first international medal in the 200m back. I’m absolutely thrilled, this just tops everything off.”

BRONZE Katalin Burian (HUN) 2:07.87 – “I’m so happy and so exhausted that I had to cry on the deck… It was really tough to go through all this… After a really hard training camp we moved immediately to the bubble, then I got race after race but my main event is here in this last day and that’s something really tough mentally. Half of the team already left while you have to keep up your focus and everything. I wanted this medal so badly, to have some reward for all the commitment – now I have it with a great time, so I’m really happy.”

Men’s 400m IM

GOLD Ilya Borodin (RUS) 4:10.02 WJ – “I’m happy with the medal but I didn’t expect to beat the junior WR. I only wanted to show a good performance. This race was like the other, I didn’t feel any special difference but even though I’m young, the last European competition over short-course gave me a lot of confidence to come here and show my best.”

SILVER Alberto Razzetti (ITA) 4:11.17 – “This is amazing, I’m very happy because this a great time. I’ve improved my personal best by ten seconds and after not swimming this race for three years, this medal is amazing. This is the second medal at the European Championships, this is incredible.”

BRONZE Max Litchfield (GBR) 4:11.56 – “I feel really good, it’s always great to be on the podium. I swam way better here than at the Olympic trials, so to do that at this competition only four weeks later and not being fully rested is a great feeling. Hopefully, I can put it altogether for this summer and be faster then.”

Women’s 50m fly

GOLD Ranomi Kromowidjojo (NED) 25.30- “It’s good. It’s not my best time but I won the gold. It was a tough race with Melanie and the other girls, but it’s great, always nice to win a gold. I’m satisfied.”

SILVER Melanie Henique (FRA) 25.46 – “I’m so tired right now… It wasn’t a perfect 50m, so it’s too bad… I feel like I could have won this but there are many small details I have to improve. It didn’t happen tonight but it can in the future.”

BRONZE Emilie Beckmann (DEN) 25.59 – “I am really-really happy because I didn’t expect this medal. It was a tough field and you have to be ready for that so I’m proud to finish in the top three.”

Men’s 50m free

GOLD Ari-Pekka Liukkonen (FIN) 21.61 – “I feel really good, I don’t think I have any words now. I thought I could win this, but I’m pretty exhausted. I wished to go between 21.4 and 21.2, it’s my first title so I’m happy.”

SILVER Benjamin Proud (GBR) 21.69 – “In the end, it was the little details which decided the race. I’m not fresh and this is not my best time. We’ve been training hard, maybe I’m not ready as have to be to do more. But it’s great to be part of this family of champions. I’ve been racing against them for what seems a lifetime now so I’m happy and satisfied.”

BRONZE Kristian Gkolomeev (GRE) 21.73 – “It was a nice race, I’m happy with the medal and with my time. I expected this and this race showed that I was in a good shape and I’m on a good way in my preparations for the Olympics.”

Women’s 50m breast

GOLD Benedetta Pilato (ITA) 29.35 – “I’m so emotional now and try to catch some breath now. I’m so happy and satisfied, this medal is what I was hoping for since yesterday. I had expected it but then you never know because this is my first senior Europeans. But it’s a gold, a first one, at my first European Championships so I’m really happy now. This gold medal was on my focus since yesterday and I’m happy with my time too as it’s better than the previous world record.”

SILVER Ida Hulkko (FIN) 30.19 – “This is incredible. I never thought I could win a medal here. I don’t really know how was the race but I guess it was really good…”

BRONZE Yuliya Efimova (RUS) 30.22 – “Looking towards Tokyo, I’m really super-excited and happy to be slowly getting back in shape and closer to my usual times. Hopefully, in a few months I’ll back in full shape. The 200m were really hard, it is my distance and the one I’m preparing for. All in all, it was pretty good. I still have a lot to work on and there is not much time but I’m looking forward to it.”
