Sabadell wins historic third trophy
Sabadell made history by clinching the women’s Super Cup for the third time. The Euro League winner played a thrilling final against fellow Spanish side Mataro in Barcelona on Sunday and won 10-9.
Sabadell has shared the top spot with Vouliagmeni (GRE) on the all-time list of the women’s Super Cup winners, as they both had two triumphs before this Sunday. Now the Spanish super team stands on the top of the ranks alone after clinching the trophy for the third time.
Just as in the previous three occasions when Sabadell was part of the Super Cup show, a single goal decided the outcome (they won twice and lost once). The all-Spanish contest was a neck-by-neck battle throughout the whole match. Sabadell, the favourite, was ahead for the most of the time despite a missed penalty in the second period. However, late in the second, LEN Trophy winner Mataro took the lead at 3-4 after scoring twice in 33 seconds. The reply came with 0:29sec before the middle break so at halftime they stood even (4-4).
Sabadell built a two-goal cushion for the first time in the middle of the third at 7-5 and early in the fourth they were 9-6 up and seemed to take firm control. But Mataro wasn’t done even though they couldn’t stop Judith Forca whose inspired play in the last period helped Sabadell to go 10-8 up with 1:58 remaining on the clock (that was Forca’s 4th goal and the third in this quarter). Ona Meseguer pulled one back putting away an extra right on the next attack and Mataro had 83 seconds remaining to force the game into a penalty shootout. But they were unable to score once more so it ended 10-9.
Sabadell could celebrate its third triumph after 2013 and 2014 as well as improved the Euro League winners’ all-time index to 9-2 over the LEN Trophy holders in the Super Cup history.
