Jug v Brescia: again, after 10 years

The last trophy is up for grabs in 2016: Jug Dubrovnik (CRO) and AN Brescia (ITA) will play for the European Super Cup on Wednesday. The match can be followed live through free streaming on the LEN website.

LEN celebrates the 40th anniversary of the European Super Cup final. For the first time it was held in 1976, it was a contest between the two top sides of Yugoslavia, Mladost (now Croatia) won against Partizan (now Serbia) 11-10. Earlier it was a clash between the respective winners of the Champions Cup/Champions League and the Cupwinners Cup, from 2003 it’s staged for the actual title-holders of the Champions League and the Euro Cup (earlier: LEN Trophy).

Upon the anniversary, the cup can return to Croatia as Jug Dubrovnik will take on Brescia on Wednesday in Dubrovnik and we have to go back until 1993 to find the last occasion when not the Champions League winning side clinched the trophy. That time Pescara (ITA) could down Jadran Split (CRO) – so the example is set for Brescia which played for this trophy twice but lost both match. In fact, he last one happened against Jug 10 years ago (12-8).

Jug lost its first final in 1981, that was another upset, staged by CSKA Moscow, the Soviet cupwinners beat them 14-11. On a historical note, that was the last Super Cup match held in Ljubljana (participants of the first six editions met in the Slovenian city). Though Jug also won the most prestigious trophy in 2001, the Super Cup was not held between 1997 and 2002, so this is going to be the 35st final.

Jug wants to give some consolation to the local fans as the Croatian champions were soundly beaten by Pro Recco (ITA) on Saturday in the second round of the Champions League. It was a one-sided match, Recco won 8-11 but was 5-11 up before the last quarter. Head coach Vjekoslav Kobescak – himself a Super Cup winning player with Mladost back in 1996 – said: “The pressure before this match is bigger then ever. We need to improve our defence if we want to be competitive. I hope at the end we will raise the trophy.”

On the other hand, Brescia is fresh from winning a tough home encounter against Spandau (GER) and ready to have a shot at the title though it might be a tougher challenge in Dubrovnik then it was ten years ago when they played the final at home in Brescia.
