“A great spectacle, a joy to watch”

At the press conference, held prior to the women’s Super Cup Final in Piraeus, both Olympiacos’ and Ethnikos’ coaches and captains hailed the occasion that two Greek teams will play for the trophy. LEN WP Director Renato Zivkovic said that he was sure, the game will be a great spectacle on Saturday evening. Tune in at www.len.eu from 19.00 (local time, 18.00CET)!

Here is what the future protagonists had to say at the press conference.

Aleksandar Ciric, coach, Olympiacos

“As everyone knows, last year Ethnikos won the LEN Trophy and we won the LEN Euro League. Tomorrow, it will be a very nice game. We have analysed the team of Ethnikos, the strong and weak points. It will be a very nice final for the fans. I want to wish success to the Ethnikos team and I am sure that both teams will give all their best, so it will be a very good final.”

Margarita Plevritou, captain, Olympiacos

“Really, it is very encouraging, that two Greek teams will face each other in the LEN Super Cup final. It will be a very nice game and I can’t wait for the start. It will also be the first final of the season, so we are very excited. Each team will try to make its best effort. By winning European trophies, the two teams have proved that they have very strong rosters.”

Stefanos Leandros, coach, Ethnikos

“This final is very important for women’s water polo, for Greek sports, for the sport in general. We expect a very strong game. We, for our part, will try to compete with a team, which is currently considered a big favourite for all the titles it competes for. A final is just a game, so a lot can happen. We have respect, of course, for our rival. It goes without saying that we are not afraid of anyone, we will go in and chase as many chances as we can to win the game. I think it will be a very nice match, we are expecting a lot of fans. The people of Piraeus seem to respond to these kinds of games. We expect a full pool, good luck to both sides. Two teams will play at a very high intensity. Don’t forget that Olympiacos is currently the backbone of our national team, Ethnikos is coming close with younger girls. It will be a high-level and tactically intense game. The spectacle will be very good. Defence plays a role in such games, we need to control the pace.”

Eleni Sotireli, captain, Ethnikos

“I also agree that it is very important that two Greek teams play the LEN Super Cup final. This proves that water polo is very important in our country! Last year was a great success for us, winning the LEN Trophy was a tremendous achievement. Nevertheless, every year is special, we all know that Olympiacos is a team with a lot of experience and top performances in the games of European competitions. I hope we will enjoy it, enjoy this game, and let me wish good luck to Olympiacos. Personally, I believe that you can win these games with the defence, we should keep it tight as I believe that the Olympiacos team has the experience, while we are a new team, with a new roster and we are trying every day to find our character, so I believe that the game will come down to defence”.

Renato Zivkovic, LEN Water Polo Director

“On behalf of LEN President, Antonio Silva, LEN First Vice President Josip Vardovic and of course myself, I want to offer our congratulations to Olympiacos and Ethnikos, because tomorrow Piraeus will be the capital of European water polo. Congratulations also to the Hellenic Federation, for the National Men’s and Women’s teams, they had excellent results. Most importantly, congratulations to your young age groupers, because Greek water polo is one of the best in Europe! One day to go, I can say with confidence that the event will be excellent. Here in Greece, the competitions are always well organised, so all I need to do is to wish the best of luck to both teams, and I’m sure that people will enjoy it. As LEN, we will do everything to continuously grow and evolve.”

Iosif Vourakis, Chairman of the Organisation of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Piraeus

“For us it is a double joy, because surely this event, which we support in various ways, whatever the result, will be a joy, whether Olympiacos win or Ethnikos! I think, following the last two years a little closer to the sport of water polo, I think it’s a sport where anything can happen. The two teams will give their best, may the best win, it will be a joy and a great success for the sport and a great spectacle for those who watch it.”
