Belgrade 2024: 100 days to go until European Aquatics Championships get under way

Saturday 2 March marks 100 days to go until the start of the 37th European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

The flagship event runs for 14 days from 10-23 June 2024 and will feature pool swimming, diving, open water and artistic swimming.

It will serve as a final chance to qualify for Paris 2024 with the qualification period for swimming ending on 23 June, the final day of competition.

The meet will also provide a racing opportunity for athletes as they finalise their preparations for the Olympic Games and presents others with key development opportunities.

The European Aquatics Masters Championships will then take place between 25 June and 5 July, featuring the same disciplines plus water polo.

It will be the first time Serbia has hosted the European Aquatics Championships, a little under a year after they staged the European Junior Swimming Championships for the third time following 2008 and 2011.

The hosts claimed two medals last year courtesy of Uroš Živanović who won 50m breaststroke silver and 100m bronze.

The 2011 edition was a big step in the development of Velimir Stjepanović who won gold in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly in front of a home crowd in Belgrade.

Since then, the Serbian has competed at three Olympics and won three European titles in the long and short-course pools.

He followed in the slipstream of Milorad Cavic, who is the sole Serbian swimmer to have won an Olympic medal with silver in the 100m butterfly behind Michael Phelps at Beijing 2008.

Nada Higl is the only Serbian woman to have won a global long-course medal when she claimed the 200m breaststroke crown at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.

Ivan Martinović was part of history at Roma 2022 when he won bronze in the solo technical as solo male artistic swimming events were held for the first time at the European Aquatics Championships.

Young divers Nikola Parausic and Aleksa Teofilović are looking to make their mark on the international stage after competing at the 2024 World Championships in Doha.
