President Silva praises Serbia’s commitment to aquatic sports in Belgrade

European Aquatics President Antonio Silva held meetings with Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic and Minister of Sport Zoran Gajic, accompanied by European Aquatics Vice President Vanja Udovicic (formerly Minister of Sport in Serbia) as Belgrade prepares to host the European Aquatics Championships in June and EXPO 2027.

It will be the first time Serbia hosts either event with the European Aquatics Championships Belgrade 2024 running from 10-23 June and the EXPO from 15 May-15 August 2027.

President Silva paid tribute to Serbia’s commitment to aquatic sport with the planned construction of a new Aquatics Centre in Surčin, southwest Belgrade.

The centre will be part of a complex that also includes the National Stadium and EXPO Center.

Discussions also took place regarding the upcoming European Aquatics Championships Belgrade 2024 and the legacy they can create, both at home and beyond Serbian borders.

President Silva said: “Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude for the privilege of being here personally with the President.

“I also want to express my gratitude in the name of the European and World Aquatics, as well as myself, for the opportunity to speak with the leader of a nation renowned for its Olympic champions.

“I am fascinated by Serbia’s progress in all fields, and the upcoming European Aquatics Championships will not only be a stage for sporting triumphs but also a chance for visitors to immerse themselves in the champion spirit of this country.

“It is a great opportunity for Serbia to showcase its many wonders to the world.

“I am especially pleased that Serbia, as part of EXPO 2027, has recognized the vital importance of water sports and is set to construct a state-of-the-art Aquatics Center.

“Hosting the EXPO is the pinnacle of national promotion, and when combined with the development of this new center, it sends a powerful message to all of Europe and the world about how sporting pride and success are cultivated, making Serbia a synonym for these attributes.

“Once again, I am impressed by the extent to which a great statesman follows and loves sports. I thank you for the reception and invite everyone to come to Serbia for the European Aquatics Championships starting on June 10!”
