European divers claim three medals on the final day of Birmingham 2022

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Noah Williams secured their second Commonwealth gold medals by teaming up in the mixed synchronised 10m platform event on the final day Birmingham 2022.

The pair, who won individual 10m gold and synchronised 10m gold respectively earlier in the event, were in second after the first of five rounds in the mixed 10m final.

After taking the lead in the second they remained at the top of the standings and their total of 333.06 saw them finish clear of Australia (318.54) and Malaysia (309.60).

“I came here with no expectations, I just wanted to have fun and this has definitely exceeded what I hoped for,” said Spendolini-Sirieix.

Williams added; “At the last Games I got a silver, so two golds is very good and now I’m going to focus on my individual competitions for the Europeans as that where I want to improve.”

Team-mates Lois Toulson, who took silver in the women’s 10m individual event, and major event debutant Kyle Kothari produced an impressive display to take second, with Australia third.

Their victory was not the only major European success of the final day at Birmingham 2022 with British Olympians Grace Reid and James Heatley combining to claim Scotland’s first diving gold of these Commonwealth Games.

The pair, who both won individual medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, but struggled in repeat that form at the 2022 edition, finished with a flourish.

A brilliant forward 3.5 somersaults routine in the final round of the mixed synchronised 3m springboard final scored 74.40 and secured them top spot on the podium ahead of Australia and Malaysia.

“It’s insane,” said Heatly,” I’m over the moon!”

Reid added; “It’s maybe not been what I’ve wanted in my individual events, but to come back into this and win gold today, just makes me speechless.”

On Sunday Matty Lee added individual 10m bronze to his synchronised 10m victory alongside new partner Noah Williams.

After claiming four medals across the World Championships and Commonwealth Games over the last two months Lee will now take a break, but the majority of the British divers will now head to Italy for the LEN European Aquatics Championships.
