Rapid racing, treats for tourists and a winter-escape in Madeira’s ‘magic’ micro-climate
The first-ever LEN European Masters Short Course Swimming Championships will be an event of the “highest level” with competitors able to race against leading athletes from across the continent and experience Madeira’s many touristic hot-spots.
The inaugural event will take place on the iconic Portuguese island from 19-25 November and REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN.
Funchal 2023 was created following requests from the masters’ community for a Short Course (25m pool) alternative to the Long Course (50m pool) competitions.
Although the biannual events, which have been running since 1987, remain extremely popular many masters swimmers enjoy the more rapid-racing 25m pools help facilitate and European Aquatics is delighted to help athletes finally realise this ambition.
“Funchal will welcome you warmly, revealing some of its natural beauty and magic during the week you spend here,” says European Aquatics and Portuguese Swimming Federation President Antonio Silva.
“It’s been amazing to see Portugal and Madeira become one of the major stages in the world and so we hope you will share with us the joy of this event where competition will be at its highest level.”
FUNCHAL 2023 – HAS INCREDIBLE VENUES!
The Penteada Olympic Swimming Pools Complex is a vibrant venue with technologically impressive modern facilities, which have hosted a series of elite continental and global aquatic championships in recent years.
Funchal 2023 also caters for those who prefer waves to walls though, with two open water distances – 1.5km and 3km – also included in the race programme at this year’s competition.
The Lido Bathing Complex will provide an excellent base for sea swimmers and supporting friends as well as families.
Easily accessible via the seafront public promenade, there are both beautiful viewing spots and relaxation areas, while the water temperatures are around 22ºC at this time of year.
FUNCHAL 2023 – GREAT FOR TOURISTS TOO!
In addition to the impressive competition venues, those seeking a winter retreat – or escape – from the cold elsewhere in Europe will be delighted to enjoy Madeira’s milder conditions.
The warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean help protect the Madeira ‘micro-climate’ to ensure that even in November outdoor exploration of the many iconic cultural attractions will be a purely positive experience.
While the green mountains and deep valleys make for stunning pictures – and walking expeditions – the city of Funchal also has a fascinating history to explore.
From its 16th century trade origins to its modern-day cosmopolitan vibes, visitors will be able to find an array of both cultural (e.g., shopping, museums, flower-decked houses) to more modern-day thrill-seeking (e.g., toboggan rides on wicker sledges and catamaran ride) adventures.
