Some of the world’s best distance swimmers will take to the waters off western Italy as the European Aquatics Open Water Cup gets underway at the first leg in Piombino on 18 May.

A combined total of more than 140 swimmers will compete in the women’s and men’s 10k events.

Among them will be Mario Sanzullo, Marcello Guidi and Marc-Antoine Olivier, who claimed the top three slots in the men’s overall rankings at the 2023 Open Water Cup.

Arianna Bridi, second in the women’s overall series last year, will also be present as part of a sizeable Italian contingent.

A 48-strong Italy team has been entered into the competition including Domenico Acerenza and Olympic bronze medallist Gregorio Paltrinieri who have both qualified for the marathon swimming at Paris 2024.

Acerenza won the men’s race in Piombino last year after going ahead on the final lap as Italian men filled the top seven places.

Frenchwoman Oceane Cassignol triumphed in the women’s event as she came past Ginevra Taddeuci and Barbara Pozzobon in the final metres.

The three women will reunite on Saturday in the waters off western Italy.

Leonie Beck won the 5k/10k double at the 2023 World Championships and was subsequently named best female open water swimmer of the year in the 2023 European Aquatics Awards.

The four-time European medallist is part of a German team of six swimmers.

She is joined by Spaniard María de Valdés who won silver at the Doha World Championships in February to book an Olympic berth.

The Great Britain trio of Hector Pardoe – who won bronze in Doha  – Toby Robinson and Leah Crisp will compete as they continue their preparations for the Paris Olympics.

In addition to the European athletes, swimmers from nations outside the continent will compete in Piombino.

Among them is Tokyo Olympic champion Ana Cunha of Brazil plus athletes from Japan, Mexico and Peru.
